Opposites Do Not Exist
Love is all there is.
It is literally impossible for anything other than Love to exist. Yet, if Love is all you experience, you will never truly be able to appreciate it.
In the same way that your favorite food grows tiresome if you eat it consistently, it is necessary to experience the opposite of that which you enjoy in order to fully understand and appreciate that which you enjoy.
Because Love is all there is and it’s impossible to experience anything other than Love, the next best thing is to forget and create the illusion of fear. You are given the tremendous gift of being able to believe fear is real in order to fully appreciate Love.
In the absence of that which you are NOT, that which you ARE is NOT.
In this lifetime and in all your other lifetimes, you have the ability to create whatever it is you wish. You get to create fear. You get to create Love. With enough trial and error, you’ll start to come to the conclusion that Love simply feels better. It’s a more enjoyable place to be. Fear may feel good to the ego, but it’s ultimately a destructive energy. What may feel righteous or justified in the short term will never bring long term happiness.
If fear doesn’t exist, how is it that we can experience it?
Let’s take a look at several pairs of opposites.
Hot vs. Cold
Temperature is a measurement of the amount of energy contained within a unit of matter. It’s a measure of how quickly the molecules within are moving. The more energy, the more movement, and the higher the temperature.
So it’s really a continuous scale from no movement to infinitely fast movement. Designating a certain unit on the scale “hot” and another “cold” is an arbitrary designation created which does not actually exist.
Recently scientists have discovered that it is impossible to reach the temperature of absolute zero, where all motion stops. It is possible to get infinitely close, but not actually reach this point. This is a revolutionary discovery! What this tells us is that no matter what possible temperature you select, you can always find a temperature higher and lower than the given temperature. Effectively, the scale of possible temperatures extend infinitely far in either direction.
Thus, the possibilities are endless! There is no beginning which can be definitely designated as a low temperature just as there is no end which can absolutely be designated as a high temperature.
No matter what temperature you select, it always represents a vibrational rate. In essence, everything is vibrating. Some objects are vibrating more slowly while others are vibrating more quickly.
See, cold is not the opposite of heat. It’s the absence of heat. It’s a continuous scale of heat with no opposites.
Light vs. Dark
Light has no opposite. The universe is composed of light. That which we call darkness is simply the absence of light.
Even in the farthest corners of the universe, light still exists. It may be an infinitely small quantity of light, immeasurable by existing technology, yet it still exists.
It is possible to send light into an area. Conversely, it is impossible to send darkness into an area, for darkness does not exist. The best you can do is block the incoming light.
On vs. Off
Imagine an electrical wire. It essentially operates in two states: on and off.
Perhaps you’re starting to realize a pattern. If so, excellent!
It is possible to send electrical current down a wire. You can send 5 amps or 500 amps. It is a scale that goes from infinitely close to zero to infinity.
Wait, isn’t it possible to have a power switch off and have exactly 0 amps flowing down the wire?
Nope! Take a sensitive voltmeter and connect it to two opposing ends of a wire, a wire that is floating in the air and not plugged into anything. Amazingly enough, you will detect a very small voltage and a very small current being sent down the wire.
It is literally impossible for anything to be still, unmoving, stationary, off.
Up vs. Down
Point up. Okay, that way is up. Now walk over to the other side of the earth. Point up again. Now you’re pointing in the opposite direction. What gives?
Okay, so up and down are only relative to the earth, but they’re still real!
Very well, pretend you’re an astronaut and hop in your rocket. Shoot out way into outer space. Now which way is up? Which way is down? Which way is right or left?
Suddenly it becomes completely obvious that these opposites are both illusions.
Now that these simple examples have been explained, let’s start to move into deeper truths, more fundamental opposites.
Good vs. Evil
Declaring anything good or evil is simply a mental judgment based in illusion, not in truth.
For example, what’s considered attractive in our society today, or “good”, is a skinny, almost anorexic looking teenager with a nice tan. Just decades ago, what was considered attractive in a woman was that she had some meat on her bones and was pasty white. Why? This meant that she was wealthy, well-fed, and wasn’t working outside under the sun like the lower class people.
What was once considered good and bad have completely flipped. Clearly, neither one is true. Both are simply arbitrary judgments.
Okay, so perhaps that’s just a preference and really not that big a deal. Murder HAS to be wrong, right!? Well, not necessarily…
Before you all start lining up with your pitchforks, remember that you believe murder is wrong! So don’t kill me! haaa =)
Is the death of a person really that bad if it saves the lives of millions? Is the birth of a person really that desirable if it causes nothing but agony and anguish for everyone who is in their presence? If a person is terminally ill and suffering tremendously, is it really necessary to delay death for whatever reason? Perhaps the ending of one’s life may actually be in alignment with their highest good.
Now, in no way am I implying that murder and killing should welcomed and invited. When you are in alignment with God, you will find that you not end any incarnation deliberately without the most sacred justification. You will revere all of life, including plants and animals, for all of life is sacred and holy.
Life vs. Death
Life has no opposite. Life is All That Is and is synonymous with Love, Consciousness, and God. Everything is an expression of life, including death itself. The termination of life, either by natural or intentional reasons, is actually impossible. All life is eternal.
Birth and death are complementary pairs, but not opposites. They are part of a larger transformation of energy, similar to the conversion of water, to ice, to water, to ice, to water, to ice, and so on.
Breathing in and breathing out are not opposites, but part of a cycle called breathing.
Evaporation and precipitation are not opposites, but part of a cycle called the water cycle.
Daytime and nighttime are not opposites, but part of the cycle we call a day.
All of these “opposites” require one another in order for either to actually exist. Evil is necessary for Good to exist. Darkness is necessary for Lightness to exist.
Because one of the pairs don’t actually exist, it is necessary for us to imagine its opposite in order to know the truth.
Speaking of illusions, let’s move on to one of the greatest opposites of all.
God vs. Satan
Satan does not exist. God is all there is.
The Satan as depicted in various scriptures and mythologies is a fabrication of the egoic mind, just like every other illusory opposite. Even though Satan doesn’t actually exist, we can still experience Satan.
Satan is nothing more than the absence of God. Because God is all there is and there is nowhere God is not, Satan does not “stand apart” (exist) from God, but is in actuality, a part of God. He is APART from God, yet A PART of God.
The classic Satanic image of a red devil is nothing more than an anthropomorphic image created by man’s imagination, just like the image of God with a white toga and a long beard. They’re just as real as Santa Claus.
What Satan ACTUALLY is is everything that is absent of light, of love, of God. He’s not the opposite of God, just the absence of God. By denying God and choosing fear, you are essentially creating Hell on earth.
Hell is not some place you’re damned to for all of eternity by some angry, judgmental God. It’s an existence you create by rejecting God in the extreme and choosing to adopt energies one could call Satanic.
Existence vs. Nonexistence
This is a duality that typically arises at very high levels of consciousness. Is the universe All That Is and made up of all the form that is moving about? All the energy? Or, is the ultimate reality the Void, the nothingness from which everything (which is then illusory) arises?
Simply put, there is no opposite to the Allness of God. Nothingness is neither a possibility nor a reality.
The idea of nothingness stems from a misunderstanding of the teachings of the Buddha.
The correct translation of the “void” is “devoid of content, not containing any thing or form.” This meaning was misconstrued as “nothingness” as the supposed opposite of Allness.
Simply by definition, nonexistence doesn’t exist.
All Duality stems from the ego.
The ego is designed to create separation where there is only Unity. It is designed to experience fear where there is only Love. It is designed to create illusions out of which there is only Truth.
All duality stems from the ego. The ego is the mind. Thus, all thoughts are based in illusion.
If you watch your mind carefully, you’ll notice that it’s always going back and forth between two polarities. “Should I do this? Yes! No!” There’s always this inner struggle, this mental tug. It’s based in illusion and is totally imaginary. It’s self-created.
Any time you notice that something has an opposite, know that you’re seeing illusion. Your ego has come up and is claiming its illusory perspective as actual truth. What you are seeing is a lie, a made-up story, a fictitious fairy tale. The meanings you have associated to the events, the judgments you have placed upon people, the labels you have given to your favorite music, the categories you have placed yourself in… all of them are made up. You created them, or more accurately, your ego created them.
YOU are the silent witness watching all that is.
YOU are the consciousness that is aware of itself becoming manifest.
YOU are that which is watching the body.
YOU are the observer of the mind, not the mind itself.
The mind is based on illusion. The mind can not distinguish between truth and falsehood. The mind can not accurately distinguish the essence behind appearance. The mind can not perceive the truth beyond the opposites.
Only YOU can. The inner essence that you are. The silent witness. The Godliness that is watching the universe unfold perfectly.
In Reality, ALL THERE IS IS LOVE.
You are that Love. Everybody else is that Love. You and I are one and the same.
We. Are. All. One.

Why is it that we tend to state that the “nicer” of two opposites “inherently exists”?
For example, most people would prefer that “love” inherently exists with fear being the non-existent “phantom” … or that “good” inherently exists with evil being purely a fantasy of the unenlightened mind.
But what if evil *is* in fact the underlying “reality” and good an occasional surprise; that is, if the universe is genuinely cold and cruel with good being only the occasional absence of “inherent evil”!
Could the “reality” be that absolutely none of this exists at all — neither good nor evil, good nor bad, love nor fear — it is simply a “bad” (or “good” ;-) dream — all of it — including this discussion — and that even our concepts of duality are flawed!

Interesting point. It’s certainly possible to take the pessimistic stance and say that only the negative side exists. Whatever works for you.

Indeed, the only experience one can have is based on their filters of perspectives, beliefs, and expectations about life. Hence, each and everyone of us have different experiences because each and everyone of us have different combinations of our filters (perspectives, beliefs, expectations).
Therefore, the important question to be asking is: “Do my perspectives, beliefs, and expectations about life give me the experience I desire?”. I believe in a universe (or dream if you prefer) where love is the answer and there are truly no opposites (only illusions) to love and every extension of love.
Rather I am flawed in my thinking or not, it does not matter, what matters is that in my perceived reality all I see is love and all I expect to sense is love: therefore everything is (in my experience) about love. I would never knew if my view is flawed because my experience tells me that it is not. Every attack is a cry for love. Everything is love, there is no other answer to me. Therefore there is no other experience.
Science discovered something very unusual that they can not explain. They discovered that infinite potential is everywhere, yet once an observer comes along and observes the space in which infinite potential was once found (through trail and error), the infinite potential no longer derives from that space unless the observer is not observing it. They can not figure out what the observer has to do with anything! Yet, the observe narrows infinite potential down through a filter of what they belief, what they expect and what they perceive things as being. Makes you think huh?
Thank you for another masterpiece article Ariel.

Would just like to point out that this article makes several assumptions that would have to make what you are saying true. You also did not use the word “compliment” right. you meant to use “complement” when referring to life and death being complementary pairs. Also, I would contend opposites do exist, such as an electron and proton and respectively to these, positrons and anti-protons. While I’m sure you would just call them complementary pairs, that doesn’t really change the fact they have exact opposite forces. It is not like temperature, where there are only varying degrees of heat, it is actually an opposite force.
And to the person posting above (anonymous), yes this post actually exists. You experience it, it exists. You can’t deny the existence of the chair you are sitting in. Philosophers have debated this and it is futile to believe “everything is an illusion”. Even if you take the extreme Descartes approach, and further it by saying it could just be our brains sitting in a tub, getting electric pulses or such creating our experiences, that doesn’t really get you anywhere does it? In order to act in the world, we as humans make reasonable assumptions in order to act successfully.
And to Ariel - our minds did not make up electrons and protons. The ego did not just make this up. They are found in nature, discovered, much like electricity. All thoughts are not based in illusion. The fact this article exists, is not an illusion. Every action has an equal and OPPOSITE reaction. Newton’s law of motion. Deal with it.

Hey Tom,
Thank you for sharing your input, as well as for pointing out the typo.
While protons and electrons aren’t opposites in and of themselves, they do have opposite forces, sure.
What are protons and neutrons fundamentally? They’re just energy vibrating at different frequencies. The vibration determines the characteristics and attributes such as positive or negative charge. So what may certainly appear to us as equal but opposite charge is nothing more than the same energy vibrating at different frequencies.
Regarding the idea of this post or a chair being an illusion, the problem with intellectualizing about it is that without any experience of “waking up” out of the illusion, it’s hard to say for sure what is illusion and what is not.
It’s like if as soon as you were born, they put a virtual reality headset on you and you grew up thinking that what you saw in the headset was real, yet people who didn’t have the headset on told you that it was all an illusion.
Arguing about the illusion from within the illusion is pretty tough. By analogy, how can you teach a fish about water if it’s been in the water the whole time? You’d have to show the fish how to leap out of the water for it to have an appropriate context in which to differentiate water from air, or illusion from reality.
Thus, intellectualizing about illusion is not necessarily the best way of going about it. I’m glad, Tom, that you’re not just taking my word for it. None of this is meant as philosophy or “food for thought.” It’s offered up simply as a way to suggest that there’s more than meets the eye, in a sense, and if you’d like to find out for yourself, there are ways of transcending the limits of the human ego/mind and experience a higher reality for yourself, the same way you can wake up in the morning and realize that your dream was, in fact, a dream, despite the fact that the experience was real nonetheless. It’s important to actually wake up and realize this, not just debate it from within the dream.
I agree with you that it’s not as simple as “making up” electrons and protons. They’re part of this physical reality which we are experiencing in the moment. There are certain laws that exist within this reality, different “rules” within the dream. The rules certainly apply within the dream and are certainly experiencable. It’s the experience itself that is real, not the props within the dreams themselves.
Thoughts are all part of the illusion. It is thought that helps us perceive that which we call electrons and protons, but in reality, there is only that which is. It is all one and the same. It is unified, infinite, and whole. There is no separation, but it is our thoughts which create separation where there actually is none.
But again, as LeVar Burton from Reading Rainbow used to say, don’t take my word for it.
