Panning Marching Bands »

This is another shot from this past weekend in Alabama. Throughout the day, I had been shooting at a nice action-freezing shutter speed in the neighborhood of 1/4000th.

As the light dipped down, I started hitting 1/100th and was hoping that I'd get some nice looking blur in the shots. Looking at the shots, I found that the blur was often too much and my keeper rate had dropped quite a bit. Marchers tend to move from side to side pretty evenly, but the dancing girls often bounce when they run so their movements are much harder to track and follow.

This shot caught my attention for a number of reasons:
-The girl is cute
-The composition fits pretty well
-The colors pop nicely
-The background blur boggles my mind

Regarding the fourth point, typically when you pan, you'll get a nice streaky blur for the background. When you don't pan a shot like this, it's easy to tell what's in the background. This shot falls somewhere in between.
